This season, Coach and Rodarte are joining creative forces and designing a capsule collection together, blending Coach’s typical New York style with Rodarte’s Californian romantic allure. Stuart Vevers, Coach’s creative director, and Kate and Laura Mulleavy, the duo at the head of Rodarte’s collections, have designed the entire ready-to-wear and leather capsule collection together right from the beginning. The bags are in Coach’s favorited Glovetanned leather, and feature the ‘This is a Coach bag’ slogan seen in the label’s campaigns during the 70s. It’s a collaboration that highlights the two houses’ expertise, explained Kate and Laura Mulleavy, “we really appreciate Coach’s position in American luxury craftsmanship, along with the rich archives and imagery that’s been used since the beginning”. Stuart Vevers added, “Rodarte’s conceptual approach to American fashion was the perfect way to reinterpret Coach’s vintage designs. This combination of influences has resulted in a cool and romantic collection that perfectly represents the two houses”.
A key material in Rodarte’s embellishments—sequins—are reimagined here through a Coach lens, in metallic leather.
The Whipstitch Eyelet is embellished with hand-punched details, cabochons and delicate leather lacing inspired by archival Rodarte techniques.
Coach advertisements from the 1970s were playfully updated, then printed, embossed and woven onto bags and ready-to-wear.
